Oka: Conversations with Sophia

In James' letter to the scattered and persecuted church, he re-presents the image of lady wisdom ('Sophia' in Greek) back to the church's mind because he's longing for the church and for us to remember her. He wants us to know when she's present in the room and even more so when she's not. He wants us to know her children, her fruit. We find this in James 3v17:

'But the wisdom that comes from heaven (she) is first of all pure; then peace-loving, considerate, submissive, full of mercy and good fruit, impartial and sincere. Peacemakers who sow in peace raise a harvest of righteousness.' Lady wisdom's child is peace. She gives birth to peace, and peace gives rise to righteousness.

In our age of instant and mass communication, James' letter affirms that in order to speak with wisdom in this generation, this generation of men and women of faith need to humble ourselves before God; we need to seek out heavenly wisdom, who is pure and peace-loving. Then invite lady wisdom to make home and establish herself in our heart. And from out of the overflow of our heart, our mouths would be fluent in life-giving language; Life-giving language that would be carried into new generations and into far reaching places.

Live and speak well.

Alofaaga,

Oka
